Future Group
RetailThe group behind Big Bazaar, which taught middle-class India to shop in a supermarket.
Future Group, founded by Kishore Biyani, built Big Bazaar, Food Bazaar, FBB and Foodhall — the formats that defined modern organised retail in India.
History
Big Bazaar was engineered around three emotions Biyani names openly: greed, fear and altruism. Its deliberately dense, noisy store design communicated value before a shopper read a price. The group also created scores of private labels, and Biyani reckons he built close to 120 brands across his career.
Today
The group was substantially restructured and its retail assets sold following financial difficulties, but its formats and its playbook remain the reference point for Indian retail.
