Kishore Biyani
Founder, Future Group
RetailBuilt Big Bazaar and, with it, the template for modern Indian organised retail.
Kishore Biyani is the closest thing India has to a founding figure of organised retail. Big Bazaar did not just sell groceries — it taught a generation of middle-class Indians how to shop in a supermarket.
What they built
He built formats around emotions rather than categories: greed in the price, fear in the scarcity, and a degree of altruism in the story. He is equally precise about the mechanics of margin — the ladder from a 100-rupee biscuit to a 1,000-rupee chocolate, and the per-kilo realisation that a brand exists to raise.
Why it matters for India
His failure analysis is as valuable as his success. Of roughly 120 brands he built, the ones that failed usually failed on the name, the codes and the pricing — decisions made on day one and nearly impossible to reverse later.
